Audi's new S lineup gets twin-turbo V8, improved performance and efficiency
In just a couple of weeks, Audi will be unveiling its new line of S models at this year’s Frankfurt International Auto Show. The S6, S6 Avant, S7 Sportback, and the S8 will debut featuring an all-new smaller displacement, fuel-efficient twin-turbo V8 replacing the thirsty 5.2-liter V10 from the previous models.
The new 4.0-liter TFSI V8 is part of Audi’s engine downsizing strategy that is drastically reducing fuel consumption while improving performance. The improved efficiency is accomplished through the advent of new technologies including an engine start-stop system and a “cylinder on demand” function, which shuts down four of the V8’s cylinders when they are not needed.

Underneath the hood of the S6, S6 Avant, and the S7 Sportback, the new motor produces 420 horsepower while providing a peak torque of 405.66 lb-ft from 1,400 all the way to 5,300 rpm. Despite the impressive power figures, fuel consumption is rated at 24.25 mpg in the S6 and S7 Sportback. The S6 Avant returns an average of 24.0 mpg.
Utilizing Audi’s seven-speed S tronic transmission and quattro all-wheel drive system, the S6 sprints from 0-62 mph in just 4.8 seconds. The S6 Avant and S7 Sportback clock in one tick slower at 4.9 seconds.
Audi’s high-performance full-size sedan, the S8, will also make use of the 4.0-liter TFSI powerplant, although, in this case, it breathes a little more fire. The S8’s engine is tuned to a whopping 520 horsepower and provides a peak torque of nearly 480 lb-ft from 1,700 to 5,500 rpm. An eight-speed tiptronic transmission delegates that power to the four corners via Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive system. A mere 4.2 seconds pass as the big-body sedan sprints from 0-62 mph. Meanwhile, under normal driving conditions, the V8 sips just one gallon of fuel every 23.06 miles.
The new efficient yet powerful Audi S lineup will begin hitting showrooms in the spring of 2012. Be sure to check the gallery for high-res shots of the new models.
