2012 Volkswagen Golf R
The 2012 Volkswagen Golf R is the most power small car ever offered by VW. They are trying to establish their R line as a solid competitor when it comes to performance vehicles. The Golf R32 went for sale back in 2004 and was available for only 3 years. It was powered by VW's 3.2-liter VR6 producing 250 horsepower. The new 2012 Golf R utilizes Volkswagen's popular 2.0-liter four banger. After a few tweaks to this powerplant, the Golf R now produces 256 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque. That's a 56 hp increase and 36 lb-ft of torque increase over the standard 2.0-liter turbo that is used in the GTI.
This means that the 2012 Golf R is more powerful and lighter than before.

The Golf R also has some design tweaks to make it look more aggressive than the standard Golf models. It now sports large blacked-out intakes and a lower front fascia. Bi-xenon headlamps and LED daytime running lights also clean up the look. The Golf R sits on 18-inch 5-spoke alloy rims and sits a half-inch lower than the stock Golf. The twin exhausts and upgraded brakes with blacked-out calipers let us know that this isn't your everyday Golf.
The interior has also been upgraded. The leather-trimmed sport steering wheel has a flat bottom like most race cars do. The bolstered sports seats are aggressive but they get the job down. Consumers have the option of adding a sunroof, automatic climate control, and navigation.
In the turns the Golf R has less nose steer than its front heavy R32 older brother thanks to the lighter 2.0-liter turbo. However, there is some turbo lag so it's wise to keep the revs high and the Golf R will be more responsive. The Haldex center differential engages the rear wheels that give the Golf R great feel when turning in and the steering is quick and precise.
There is no word on pricing yet but Volkswagen said it would be about the same as the previous R32 which started at about $31,000.
